Having spent decades diving, photographing and exploring Cayman's waters, Jason has witnessed the island's marine environment evolve while helping thousands of visitors experience it for the very first time. His work in marine conservation, including raising awareness of invasive lionfish species in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean, reflects a deep commitment to protecting the waters he calls home.

For anyone specifically interested in scuba diving for the first time or wanting to advance their skills, Ambassador Divers also offers PADI programmes for every level. Beginners can take part in a one-day Discover Scuba Diving course to experience breathing underwater with supervision, where others wanting to earn their Open Water Certification can doing e-learning in advance then do their practical training and open water dives in Cayman. Certified divers can also continue their training by taking part in specialty courses and there are even programmes designed for children as young as eight and ten years old who are enthusiastic about the sea.

To help visitors make the most of their time on the island, Jason shared his insights on Grand Cayman’s world-class diving, snorkeling and charter experiences.

If guests only have one day on the water, what itinerary would you recommend?

Jason Washington: "If I only had one day to introduce someone to Grand Cayman, I'd combine Stingray City, Coral Gardens and Starfish Point. It gives guests the chance to experience our famous stingrays, snorkel over beautiful coral reefs full of tropical fish, and then finish the day in one of the island's most peaceful locations. It really captures what makes Cayman so special."

What makes Stingray City such a bucket list experience?

Jason: "Stingray City is one of those experiences that live up to the hype. There aren't many places in the world where you can stand in crystal clear Caribbean water and interact with wild southern stingrays in such a natural setting. It's an encounter that feels exciting, humbling, and unforgettable, whether you're five years old or visiting Cayman for the tenth time.”

For families with young children or non-swimmers, is a Stingray City charter still a good option?

Jason: "Absolutely! Stingray City is one of the most family friendly experiences in Grand Cayman. The main sandbar is shallow enough to stand in, and we provide flotation devices for anyone who wants extra confidence in the water. Our crew is always there to help, so even guests who aren't confident swimmers can relax and enjoy the experience."

If you could take a first-time visitor to only one dive or snorkel site in Grand Cayman, where would you take them and what makes that location so special?

Jason: "For divers, I'd choose the North Wall. It's one of those dives that leaves a lasting impression. The wall drops away into deep blue water, the visibility is incredible, and there's always the possibility of encountering turtles, eagle rays and other pelagic life. It perfectly showcases why Grand Cayman has earned its reputation as one of the world's great diving destinations."

For snorkelers, I'd recommend the Kittiwake wreck. It's calm, colourful and full of marine life, making it an ideal place for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.

What Cayman marine life surprises first-time visitors the most?

Jason: "Everyone expects to see stingrays, but I think people are often surprised by just how healthy and diverse our reefs are. It's not unusual to see sea turtles, eagle rays, colourful reef fish, octopus and sometimes even reef sharks all on the same day. The clarity of the water makes every encounter feel even more memorable."

As someone who has photographed Cayman's underwater world for international brands and media, what is one experience underwater that still leaves you in awe every time you see it?

Jason: "For me, it's the light. No two days underwater are ever the same. Watching sunlight dance through the water, especially early in the morning when everything is calm, still stops me in my tracks. Add a sea turtle gliding through those rays of light or an eagle ray passing overhead, and it's a reminder that the ocean never stops inspiring me, no matter how many dives I've done."
