Why May is One of the Best Times to Visit Grand Cayman

If you’re looking for the perfect balance of great weather, fewer crowds, and local experiences, May is one of the best times to visit Grand Cayman. It sits just outside of peak season, but this month the island ebbs and flows between being relaxed and intentional to big cultural events.
Relaxing Public Holidays
The month begins with Emancipation Day (May 4th 2026), a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the Cayman Islands, then a few weeks later we celebrate Discovery Day (May 18th 2026), which marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1503 to our islands. Both public holidays are not about large-scale events, but about how our community embraces long weekends. Visitors may notice a slower pace across the island and see full beach setups along Seven Mile with umbrellas, packed coolers and residents spending the day with family and friends. If you’re on island, this is a great opportunity to experience Cayman the way locals do—simple, social, and centered around the sea.
Let’s Get Artsy
Beyond the public holidays, May also brings a creative energy to the island with the popular Cayman Art Week from 26-31 May 2026. Galleries and studios across Grand Cayman open their doors to showcase local artists and gives visitors a chance to explore a different side of our island. It’s a refreshing contrast to the typical beach scene and a great way to support the local creative community. They offer a hop-on-hop-off bus for their featured gallery nights, Q&A sessions with the artists, pop-up exhibits and so much more. Bring the gift of local art home with you after you see the range of talent that we have on island. Learn more about Cayman Art Week 2026 by visiting their website.
One Epic Carnival
If you’re looking for something more high-energy, Cayman Carnival delivers exactly that. 2026 is extra special because it is the first time in years that we will have one unified carnival where Batabano and CayMas will join forces. This means that we will have more participants in unique bands that range from fun-loving charitable T-shirt bands to full fledged, feathered and sequined costumes. With participants dancing, soca music blasting, and vibrant costumes, it’s one of the most exciting events of the year. Even if you’re not participating in the parade, the atmosphere is electric and well worth experiencing on the sidewalk as it moves from Seven Mile to George Town.
Music Lovers
Rounding out the month is the Out of This World (OOTW) Music Fest, which brings down international musical talent. In 2026 the feature acts will be Nelly and Vybz Cartel, which targets music lovers who are into American hip hop/ pop-rap and Jamaican dancehall. Excitement has been building for months especially when superstars of this calibre come visit our tiny island. Come out and join a lively crowd in an all-day festival-style atmosphere. It adds another layer to May’s appeal—something that younger travellers and music lovers will especially appreciate.
So while winter and spring typically are the most popular time to visit, May quietly offers a great option: a more relaxed, very authentic, and very engaging version of Grand Cayman. Book a stay with us here!
