Christmas in Cayman: Food, Lights and Fireworks

There’s something magical about spending Christmas in the Cayman Islands. Cool breezes replace winter chill, sparkling waters stand in for snowy landscapes, and the island’s festive spirit creates a holiday season unlike anywhere else. If you’re staying at Christopher Columbus on Seven Mile Beach, you’re perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of Cayman’s Christmas charm—from seafood feasts to dazzling lights and lively holiday events.
Cayman Conch & Lobster Season Are Open
December is prime time for two of Cayman’s most celebrated ingredients: lobster and conch. Caymanian homes take full advantage of the season because it is short lived and has catch limitations. Of course, year-round you’ll see conch items like fritters and chowder on menus, but that is imported from the Bahamas. When it’s freshly caught Caymanians will use it to make Marinated Conch, Conch Soup and Stewed Conch. Typically, these dishes are made in our homes, but there are local restaurants and roadside stalls selling them too. When it comes to a whole Cayman lobster this is a rare item to find, but I always find one at Grand Old House, The Wharf, Cayman Cabana and The Brasserie. It may sound intense i.e. 2-3lbs, but if you see it on a menu I recommend you order it because the restaurant can only have a handful on hand per day.

A Caymanian Tradition: Following the Christmas Lights
One of the most beloved holiday traditions in Cayman is exploring the island’s elaborate Christmas light displays. Families spend weeks decorating their homes, and this transforms the island’s neighbourhoods into glowing, whimsical scenes.
Two must-see stops include:
- The Crighton Family home in Prospect has been an island favourite for decades. It is free for the public and is busy every night of the week in December. They are particularly known for having animatronics and small homes with unique displays.
- The Bodden Family home located across from Sunset House in George Town is a popular destination to enjoy colourful Christmas lights and displays throughout December. The property may be smaller in size than the Crighton property, but they use every inch of space to add some glowing Christmas magic.
If you don’t feel like walking around the properties, you can still embrace the Christmas spirit by driving around with some festive tunes.
The Christmas Spirit at Camana Bay
For guests staying at Christopher Columbus, a one-stop Christmas destination throughout December will be Camana Bay. With decorations and lights streaming between the restaurants and shops to their famous fountains, you’ll enjoy strolling around this community. Their 42-foot Christmas tree is a popular sight and every night (6pm, 7pm & 8pm) they feature a music and animated lightshow. Also, dont miss registering for the Santa Run, an early morning 5K with lots of Santa hats.
Christmas Day Meals & NYE Fireworks Displays
If you’re visiting, let’s assume that you would rather enjoy the your vacation than cook during the holidays. Make the most of your condo at Christopher Columbus and consider using nearby local supermarkets, such as Kirk Market and Foster’s. Each store has now launched their ‘Holiday Dinner’ catering options where you simply pick it up at the date and time of your choice. They are a popular choice with residents who may want a full meal or just a few items made for them.
If you want an authentic Caymanian Christmas I must mention Island Taste, a small, successful business that has been around for 50 years. Their holiday menu has traditional American dishes, but also Caribbean favourites such as Cayman Style Beef and Stewed Conch. My sister has used them for the past two years and her home is one of my favourite food pit-stops on Christmas Day.

As December ends, a night that always brings excitement is New Years Eve. For family friendly fireworks you can choose to visit Camana Bay as they host an early-evening fireworks show at 8pm. If you’re staying at Christopher Columbus Condos you have the best view on island. Bring a cooler and towel/blanket down to the beach and watch as the entire Seven Mile Beach lights up with a firework show at midnight that you’ll never forget.
